Sec1 Maths performance task Reflection

Reflection on statistics in real life:

Statistics is about gathering, analyzing and making conclusions from the data.

Statistics briefly consist of Pie charts, Pictograms,Histograms,Frequency tables, Stem and leaf diagram,line-graphs and bar graphs which are all tools for organizing data in such a way which would make it easier for people to understand it. Statistics also help us to find the mean, median and mode of the data more easily. Some of the graphs and tables can organize two sets of data, such as Bar graphs and histograms while others can only organize one set of data, such as stem and leaf diagram.

Statistics provides tools for prediction and forecasting and it is widely applicable in various social and natural sciences, political sciences, government, medicine and as well as in business such as the insurance industry. For example, statistics are a very important part of political campaigns as they lead up to elections. Every time a scientific poll is taken, statistics are used to calculate and illustrate the results in percentages and to calculate the margin for error.

Statistics can be used in various fields from simple to complex. Its main use is in research tasks. It makes our data compilation easier and It is about simplification of things in real world. It is playing a vital role in calculations in science subjects. It is also helpful to keep and improve the record of an organization. Statistics provides the quantitative basis for arriving at decisions in all matters.Statistics can be used to summarize or describe a collection of data. This is useful in research, when communicating the results of experiments. In addition, patterns in the data may be modeled  that can be used to draw inferences about the process or population being studied, this is inferring from the data.Inference is a vital since it provides a logical prediction based on the data.

Statistics can also be used in our daily routine such as planning for saving money by organizing the total amount of money we have, our expenditure and our savings into any form of suitable tables, charts and graphs such as a pictogram,line-graph,or a pie chart.A pictogram would be useful in this example  for me as it is very easy to organize the data and it is also very convenient to refer to it.

Another example would be my family’s usage of electricity, water and gas, charted in the utilities bill .The “Singapore Power" use graphs for sharing such information with the users as it allows the users to realize the rate of their consumption compared with the rest of Singapore, whether higher or lower.

There are many more uses of statistics as showed in newspaper articles, such as the nursing numbers in UK and EU and the number of children dead due to  poverty or crime.

Statistics are also used in other subjects like science and I&E within my learning activities. In science I had to represent the speed and time of a certain object in a line-graph. In I&E,I had to collate the different responses and the frequency for each of them in a bar graph.

Learning experience:
I worked in a group of three and we were able to work very efficiently together while assigning and completing our task. The strengths of my group is that we are able to assign equal and fair amount of the task to each member and were very good with time management. Each member of the group was very hardworking and was able to complete their task efficiently although they faced some difficulties. My roles were to design the design of the poster draw out the draft of the frequency table and to answer some of the questions required in the poster .The challenges were that we had difficulties with thinking of a perfect design for our poster.  we also had difficulties with drawing out the frequency tables and the bar graphs in the learning device and had to draw out in paper and have to take pictures of them instead. We would try to think of more innovative ideas of presenting the data and we would try to meet-up more to complete our task if given a similar project in the future.

leader

Mother teresa:
  1. Mother Teresa helped a lot of poor children by building schools and missionaries and taking care of welfare. Although there was criticism, she only focused on her aim and never gave up on it. There are a lot of traits that we can learn from her such as kindness, perseverance, patience and helpfulness.
2)A good leader manages crisis under stressful situations by never giving up and taking wise decisions which would benefit everyone.
